I believe that there are many spellings to his name like XiaoLang(chinese) and Shaoran(??), even weirder ones include showrang. Syaoran is taken from his japanese katakana. Syaoran first appeared in the manga as a transferred student, after the sports meet. In the anime he appeared when Sakura was capturing the lightning, i think. He started out as Sakura's rival in cards, as well as for Yukito's affections, but later, *spoiler*they became great friends who help each other out a lot, Syaoran even find himself falling for her.
